Today I had a little party at home. The theme was to assemble the last furniture that I got sent at home, with which I complete the basics for having a cozy functional apartment.
In this assembly-fest we ended up being 7, and we talked and ate and drank more than assemble. But still, one big table and three chairs, not bad! Plus it was really more of an occasion to have good friends at home, a house warming party. Only these days one doesn't want to hear about warmth... so, a cool house party :)
I gave a late warning to invite people to the party. Still, it is very interesting to see the people that jumped for it, the people that replied and the ones who ignored it.
Anyway, now I feel more at home. And big thanks for all the assembly-friends!
One of the things I've been doing today is to advance just a little bit in the TensorFlow tutorial. My friend Jose and I decided to look at it together, and even if we go at a leisure pace, at least we are really looking into it. I'm very happy about the decision!
We opened a chat using slack, to try how it works. It seems you need to have an account to access it. I mostly like how it is done. The way you have different channels, can reference things, can upload media and so on. I don't like that it has a proprietary license though.
Related to that, I've seen a couple of alternatives I'd like to explore: matrix and mattermost.
Other than slack, we decided to keep a jupyter notebook to keep notes on what we are looking at. I love it! We've put it in github, here: https://github.com/jordibc/tensorflow_tutorial. There you can even see the notebooks without having to download the repository. Well played, github.
My currently open list of related pages to look at:
To a caipirinha. By Juan, one of the friends from the Go club in Madrid. He got a raise today at work, and he decided to invite everyone in the club for one. And I had it, and I thank him :)
Juan also commented on the game that Antonio and I played today, and let us both learn about a few things we didn't know. I'm grateful for that, so today, double thanks to Juan!
It's silly that I am so inconsistent writing entries in this blog. I still would like to treat subjects that matter, to me anyway. At the same time, talking about the little things that happen from day to day is rewarding in its own way. Not the least because it allows me to see some kind of continuity and use of the time. And in that spirit...
Today I received my last batch of important stuff for the house, that I bought at an ikea and they delivered. To assemble everything, I'm throwing a party this sunday.
I also cleaned up the code in mapelia and fixed the Mollweide projection. You can also choose where the cap is going to appear, because Amelia seemed to want that functionality. It's looking good to me. Even if it took me quite a long time to make it all work, I find it really enjoyable.
That's it. Not much to say about today, but better than nothing.
Why on Earth would there still be things like kings and queens? I should be quite obvious by now that there is no divine mandate to have some random guys that may or may not be suited for a job that affects a ton of people, which didn't choose the fella in question to represent them.
I'm not only surprised that such a system would exist, but astonished that main political parties would even refuse to consider other options. And this comes from the PSOE doing it so now. The funnily called “socialist” and “worker” party. Not that any party would have an excuse to sustain such a contradictory system, mind you, but especially atrocious that such a party would go to those extremes to keep the system.
But that's one of the things I'd like to: write a bit about how my days are during my sabbatical. It's one thing to enjoy them, and a different one to share them. And to know where all that time went to.
Today I talked to Ilan Rosenfeld, a movie director that is interested in making a documentary about people that have changed the course of their lives, and is interested in using me as an example. I find it very funny, the idea of me being somehow interesting for someone, cameras recording and me simply showing and talking about things that I find interesting.
Afterwards, a bit of ionic, and then Go club. Where I met again with old friends and felt very confortable with the people.
This is very far from all the cool things I wanted to mention (will I go to Japan? will my projects get noted? ...). But after getting back home at around 2:30am after beers and good conversation in a nice place around the calle del pez, I can barely keep myself awake. Madrid: love you.
I'm in Denia, visiting my (mostly) charming nephews.
Denia is the place where I spent all my summers as a kid. I love this place. And if you see the picture, I'll have a hard time believing that you don't understand.
One of my silly dreams is to eventually come to live here, open a crossing between a pizza place and a bookshop. Probably with computer stuff around too, and games of all kinds.
